Susan Richards: I started working with beads about 10 years ago and
interestingly I have been drawn to this medium through friends who have gotten involved. My interest in beads has progressed from putting a few beads on a string to
creating complex forms. In fact this Spring I traveled to the Czech Republic where many of the world's beads are manufactured, with some other beaders, to visit
the bead factories and rofessional glassmakers. I have studied with a number of fine teachers and have
attended large bead shows in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Tucson, Arizona; Sante Fe, New Mexico; and Chicago, Illinois. I enjoy working with small beads although
most of my friends think I am a bit daft to work with
such small materials. I am a member of two bead
societies and show my work here and there.

I was born in Arizona and lived most of my life in California till my husband retired in 1998 and we moved to Prescott. I was also in the Aerospace business for 23 years as a Material Analyst.

I have always enjoyed fiber art and especially quilting and have been quilting since 1987. When I moved to Prescott I joined Thumb Butte Quilt Group. In the quilting arena I enjoy appliqué and traditional quilting and incorporate that medium into my wearable art. I also love surface design and I am now dyeing my own fabric and getting into texture and art quilts. My latest achievement was to win “Viewers Choice” for a garment I made “She Married the Chauffer” in the Prescott Fine Arts Show.
.
My love of quilting and surface design has led me to beading. My dear friend, Alice Perkins, introduced me to beading when she formed a new beading group as part of Thumb Butte Quilt Guild and with her patient teaching got me started in the art of beading. I thoroughly enjoy beading giving me another avenue to express my art and I am able to incorporate that medium into my quilting and surface design as well as jewelry.

After being a financial administrator for a government agency for most of my working life, I decided to get
reacquainted with the right side of my brain. Since I always had an appreciation for hand-made jewelry, I began taking courses in silversmithing and really enjoyed learning how to design and craft silver jewelry. However, my silversmithing days were numbered, since after taking early retirement, my husband and I sold our home in Atlanta, GA, and traveled the country in our motorcoach for several years.

While wintering in Palm Springs in 1999, I went with a group of friends to a bead workshop. I was instantly hooked! I discovered, that for me, there is something intensely sensual about working with beads - the many colors, the diverse textures, the vast variety of combinations that can be utilized to make a thing of beauty. My passion for this medium continues to grow as I learn new and better techniques to use. I’ve recently seen a tee-shirt that says “I’ve never seen a bead I didn’t want”, and I think that’s really true for me.

I hope that the people that purchase my jewelry receive as much joy in wearing it as I do in creating it.

My work is currently at the Van Gogh's Ear in Prescott, AZ and previously in the Lumina Gallery in Taos, NM and in Objects in Scottsdale, AZ. I can also design a piece just for you. Please contact me at mrkbeads@cableone.net for more information.

I recently became acquainted with the "Beading Jewels" thru Rowena and I am excited to be part of this great group of artist for such a wonderful cause, the United Animal Friends.
My medium is in fiber arts, with my passion being weaving and spinning.
I am pleased to say that thanks to a recent workshop hosted by Rowena Tank, (aptly named, "Spinning w/ Beads") I can now proudly embelish my fiber pieces with beaded jewels.
At present my focus is on spinning up lots of buffalo fiber to weave into my original designs. It is such an amazing fiber to work with, plus, it's machine washable.
Anyone interested in catching a really fun show, please join us on November 4th at the Hampton Inn in Prescott.
Rowena and I will be spinning with our Suzie Pro spinning wheels and I intend to bring along the Little Gem II wheel just to show it off.
The beaders have been extremely busy and have some truly amazing pieces to showcase. Pat Brockert has some outstanding knitted felted hats for you to ponder. Her table is always a show stopper.
Our other talented artist have some exquisite felted purses ready to entice you.
This show is gearing up to be
a one stop shopping holiday experience. Come by and have fun, let's play dress up!
We will have you adorned and ready
to go by the time you walk out the door. Plus, how can you resist, it benefits a great cause, the United Animal Friends!
